Framing What You Do

What we tell ourselves makes a difference. Mindset is extremely important to the learning process and so much of what we tell our mind is our reality.

During class, I had two students who were training together. One had a terrible fighting stance, feet side by side, and no good base while doing some boxing combos. And so I went over, instead of pointing out they had a bad fighting stance, I asked them to show me a good fighting stance.

When they showed me this awesome fight stance, knees bent, feet at the proper levels, it was great. So, it’s not that he had a terrible fighting stance. He actually had an awesome fighting stance. He just wasn’t using it.

When we tell ourselves that we’re capable of something, it gives us the reassurance that, hey, I can do this. People who have trouble sometimes when working out, think they’re out of shape. They tell themselves, “I can’t work out” or “I can’t be healthy.” Well, actually you can. You’re just not doing it. You can be healthy, but you’re just not living healthily.

Having a confident mindset is not only useful to your martial arts training, but other things we’re doing in our lives.
